There’s no doubt boosting morale around the office is important. Happy people are more productive, absent less and nicer to be around. But it’s also something that’s easy to put in the too hard basket, especially when you have a limited budget and precious little time to think about it.
The good news is, it doesn’t have to be difficult, require hours of planning or break the bank. In this article we’ll share some fun, effective and affordable ways you can build team spirit in your workplace.
There’s nothing more effective at boosting the spirit than gratitude. It works both ways too – we feel good when we give it and receive it! However, too often we get caught up in the day to day and fail to reflect on the things we are grateful for.
When you make a regular effort to acknowledge the efforts of your team at work, they’ll feel appreciated and motivated to be their best. Whether you have a weekly meeting where everyone has the opportunity to participate or make it more personal by communicating your gratitude one-on-one, upping the gratitude in the office is the ideal way to start building real morale in your team.
Share a Higher Purpose
A meaningful way to bring your team together and make a positive impact on the world at the same time is to help others in need. As we struggle through busy days and hefty workloads, it’s easy to forget that there are many people in the world who lack the most basic things we take for granted.
Finding a cause that is aligned with your company values and supporting it as a team is a wonderful way to build team spirit. For example, here at Reo we are all bout elevating human potential – which is why we partnered with B1G1 and Dot Com Mob to launch our Elevate a Nation Campaign. Only 24% of children in remote Australian communities have access to a school that goes to year 10 – and so every time we place a candidate, we provide these kids with 50 days of technology education. Our team are making a significant and meaningful contribution every day, which motivates us, brings us together and puts a smile on our face!
An oldie, but a goodie! Happy hour doesn’t necessarily have to be the traditional Friday afternoon drinks, it can be anytime and with any theme. The important part is to get your entire team together for some relaxed social time, where they can connect and talk about something other than work.
Whether you schedule a Monday morning tea with coffee and snacks to help you ease into the week, a Wednesday lunchtime special where you shout the team lunch, or the traditional beer and soft drinks on Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend, make it regular and on work time. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, but the gesture goes a long way to show your appreciation for their hard work.
Good Office Vibes
Creating a work environment that is pleasant will enhance the mood, productivity and morale of your team. There are many simple ways you can add good vibes to your office space – from indoor greenery, to music, or artwork on the walls. Making the effort to create a nice place for everyone to be will have a long-term positive impact, so if you’re not sure where to start, ask for suggestions from your team – they’re sure to have some great ideas.
Organising a group activity to do together is a great way to break the routine of work and have some fun. There are lots of possibilities – from meditation or exercise, to a book club or cooking class. Find something that can be done in the office during work time to make it easy and enjoyable for all.
