Tuesday has been shown to be the week’s most productive day, meaning it’s also the best time to have a conversation with your boss about getting a raise.
The ebb and flow of the work week looks different for everyone – some people might do the most work on Mondays and others may perform best on Fridays. As insignificant as it might seem, the fluctuation of the work week’s productivity levels can play a drastic role in certain interactions.
For example, studies have shown that our brains make the best decisions during the first half of the day, meaning that is the best time to take care of important tasks. If you combine your fresh, morning brain with the most productive day of the week, you’ve hit your sweet spot. So, which day of the week is most valuable, and how can you capitalise on it?
Tuesday is the most productive day
A study conducted by U.S. firm Accountemps in 2013 showed that 39 per cent of the HR representatives questioned voted Tuesday as the week’s most productive day. Why is this? Many believe that Mondays are primarily spent catching up with emails, getting the gears in motion again and readjusting to work after the weekend.
By Tuesday, however, employees have gotten the administrative tasks out of the way and are able to focus more on their individual projects. This pattern has been demonstrated in the same survey since 1987, meaning our average productivity habits have remained the same for 30 years despite the changes in business that have occurred over that time.
What should I do with this information?
Now that you know the week’s sweet-spot, you should structure the important bits, such as a meeting with your employer about a raise, to fall on Tuesday if possible. Though it might seem unnecessarily specific to schedule a conversation for a certain day, it could potentially play a large role in whether or not you get the raise.
Hopefully you’ll catch your boss when he or she is in the Tuesday productivity zone and is focused on the smooth running of the company. If your boss is clear-headed and in a good mood, it’s more likely that he or she will react positively to the suggestion of a raise, especially if you can prove that you are an invaluable asset to the company, according to J.T.
